Luftbild Rendsburg - Um das Jahr 1100 errichtete der dänische Jarl Björn eine erste Festung auf der Insel | Historisch gesichert ist ein Treffen zwischen fränkischen und dänischen Abgesandten im Jahr 800, bei dem die Eider erstmals als Grenze zwischen den Machtbereichen beider Reiche festgelegt wurde. Um das Jahr 1100 errichtete der dänische Jarl Björn eine erste Festung auf der Insel, die später als Reinholdsburg bekannt wurde. Diese Burg wurde zwischen 1150 und 1200 mehrfach erneuert und vergrößert, wobei Graf Adolf II. die Burg erneuerte und Graf Adolph III. den Wiederaufbau begann.
